Irony is a literary device used to signify a totally opposite meaning of what is stated. Th ending reflects the moral of the story, which observes that life rewards or punishes us in terms of our deeds. Sir Mohan despises anything Indian and ignores his native wife. But ironically, at the end, he remains just an Indian in the eyes of the British. Even his flawless British accent could not save him from being punched and thrown out of the first-class compartment. The mockery of his vanity becomes evident to us. On the other hand, Lachmi, who always maintains her simplicity, is seen to be sitting comfortably in the zenana compartment with her dignity and respect intact. Lachmi’s glowing diamond nose-ring against the railstation lights reflects her triumph. She throws a red-dribble like a dart to show her indifference towards the artificial display of refinement. As insulted Mohan Lal’s bluster to have the audacious soldiers arrested goes in vain, his pride gets injured. In this way, the dramatic scene serves as an ideal ending for the story and an apt justice against Sir Mohan’s pretentious attitude. However, we are not given enough clue whether he learnt a lesson or not from the untoward incident.
