Give a brief sketch of the conversation between the narrator and the girl. Class 12 | English (The Eyes Have It) 6 Marks

Ans:

In Ruskin Bond’s short story ‘The Eyes Have It’, the narrator had been travelling in a vacant train compartment. At Rohana a girl got in. Bored of solitude, the narrator was thrilled at the possibility of a conversation with the girl and asked her if she was going all the way to Dehra. The girl got startled and said that she was unaware of the narrator’s presence in the compartment. The narrator was careful not to reveal the fact that he was blind. So he told the girl vaguely that he had only heard her come in. The girl then informed him that she would get off at Saharanpur where her aunt is supposed to meet her. The narrator trying to be friendly with the girl replied that he would then not try to get too familiar with her as ‘aunts’ are usually formidable creatures. Later the girl expressed her wish to go to Mussoorie and told him that he was very lucky to go there. The narrator in reply gave a brief but fascinating description of Mussoorie in October. He also pretended to look out of the train window at her request and confidently said a few words about the landscape. The narrator even complimented the girl by saying that she had an interesting face. She was flattered by the narrator’s compliment and confessed that the remark was quite nice to hear since she was tired of people telling her that she had a pretty face. Finally, the girl expressed her relief as it was a short journey and bade the narrator goodbye at Saharanpur. Thus, their conversation ended abruptly.
