Compare and contrast the personalities of Sir Mohan Lal and Lady Lal, especially the way they conduct themselves at the railway station Class 11 | English (Karma) 6 Marks
Ans:
Lady Lal is an Indian native woman in her mid-forties. She is passive, subordinate, humble and satisfied in her own way about life. Whereas, Sir Mohan Lal is ‘distinguished’, sophisticated and proud but caught in a medley of cultural confusion. Sir Mohan Lal travels in the first-class compartment while Lady Lal in the inter-class zenana compartment. Her dirty white sari with red border and gold ornaments show her rustic simplicity and her lack of elitist taste. This stands in sharp contrast to Sir Mohan Lal’s Saville Row suit and prim and proper outfit. Lady Lal is a warm and cordial woman who shares her family issues with a coolie. Sir Mohan Lal, on the other hand alienates himself from his own people. Even in their food habits, they are completely different. While Sir Mohan is busy sipping scotch and thinking about his old days in Oxford, Lady Lal is gorging on cramped chapattis and mango pickle and conversing with a coolie. But, Lady Lal remains true to her own self while Sir Mohan is far from his own self.
