During which time period was Karma written | What was the social condition at that time Class 11 | English (Karma) 6 Marks
Ans:
‘Karma’ was written at a time when India was under the British rule.
A picture of the colonised society is drawn in this story. There were many educated Indian men who felt ashamed of being Indian and followed the western culture. They had adopted well the ‘dominating’ attitude which they imposed on their wives and on the lower sections of the society. Sir Mohan Lal is a representative of those Indian men. The story represents a cross-section of the Indian society where the porter and the bearer are the part of the working class. The Indian women on the other hand, were meek and obedient. They complied to their husband’s wishes which resulted in submission to the male-domination. Frequent travelling of women was not common as can be seen from the almost ’empty’ inter-class zenana compartment. The condition of women in the then society is represented by the character of Lachmi.
