SARBA SIKSHA ABHUJAN
Government of India has launched a wide- spread literacy drive with a view to make a new, educated India. This drive to ensure education for all is known as “Sarba Shiksha Abhijan”. Article 45 of Indian Constitution pledges for arranging free and compulsory education for all boys and girls till the age of 14 and Sarba Shiksha Abhijan aims to implement this. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has formulated a comprehensive programme to bring all kids between 6 and 14 under the purview of this scheme. It aims to provide primary education for all by 2007 and education upto class VIII for all by 2010. A special drive has been made to minimise the percentage of school drop-outs and to provide basic amenities of learning for the backward students. Students are given school uniform, text books, expenses to buy the essentials to continue studies and also mid-day meals so that they feel encouraged to come to school. In many places funds are allocated for construction or expansion of school buildings and many para-teachers or teaching staffs are recruited to facilitate the programme. Central and State Government educational bodies are working hand in hand to make this scheme a grand success. Several changes have been made in the school curriculum and in examination-evaluation process too. Along with the normal curriculum-based study, students are taught value of education and activity based learning. Most importantly, abolition of pass-fail system in education till class eight have guaranteed minimal drop-outs.
