SUPERSTITIONS
Superstitions are the beliefs and notions of ours that certain events have got the supernatural power to bring good or bad luck to our lives. They impede the progress of a race and civilisation. When the blessings of education did not reach the old generations of people, they thought that human life was governed by stars and other extra-terrestrial phenomena. When they could not understand the workings of nature, they relied on some blind beliefs and imposed those beliefs on the succeeding generations. Thus they have got ingrained in the minds of people. In spite of the development of science and technology men have not been able to get rid of these irrational ideas completely. Weak- minded and semi-literate people are gullible and prone to superstitions. Like many other social evils, superstitions harm an individual and also a nation. These beliefs have demoralising effect on people. They weaken our mind and leave a negative effect on our self-confidence. In this age of enlightenment, superstitions have no place. Consciousness among all should be inculcated. Efforts to eradicate superstitions of all forms should be made. Every literate citizen of the country has a responsibility to spread the awareness among others.
