About the Poet:

Ruskin Bond (1934 – ) : is an Indian author of British descent. In 1992, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection, Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. His famous works include Room On the Roof, A Flight of Pigeons, Angry River, The Blue Umbrella. The present text is an edited version of his short story Ghosts on the Verandah.

Let’s Continue 1st Part:

Anil’s mother’s memory was stored with an incredible amount of folklore, and she would sometimes astonish us with her stories of spirits and mischievous ghosts.

অনিলের মায়ের স্মৃতিতে এক অবিশ্বাস্য পরিমাণ লোককথা সঞ্চিত ছিল, এবং তিনি মাঝে মাঝে তাঁর ভূত এবং দুষ্টু প্রেতের গল্প নিয়ে আমাদের অবাক করে দিতেন।

One evening, when Anil’s father was out of town, and Kamal and I had been invited to stay the night at Anil’s upper-storey flat in the bazaar, his mother began to tell us about the various types of ghosts she had known.  

একদিন সন্ধ্যায় অনিলের বাবা যখন শহরের বাইরে ছিলেন, আর কমল এবং আমাকে বাজারের অনিলের উপরের তলায় ফ্লাটে রাতে থাকতে আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয়েছিল, তখন তার মা তার জানা বিভিন্ন ধরণের প্রেতাত্মা সম্পর্কে আমাদের বলতে শুরু করেছিলেন।

Mulia, the maid– servant, having just taken a bath, came out on the verandah, with her hair loose.

পরিচরিকা মুলিয়া সবে স্নান করে বারান্দায় উঠে এল, চুল ঢিলে করে ছেড়ে দিয়ে ।

“My girl, you ought not to leave your hair loose like that,” said Anil’s mother. “It is better to tie a knot in it.”

অনিলের মা বলেছিলেন, “আমার মেয়ে, তোমার চুল ঢিলে করে ছেড়ে দিয়ে আসা উচিত নয়।” “এটিতে একটি গিঁট বেঁধে রাখা ভাল” 

“But I have not oiled it yet,” said Mulia.

মুলিয়া বলেছিল, “তবে আমি এখনও এটিকে তেল দিইনি।”

“Never mind, but you should not leave your hair loose towards sunset. There are spirits called Jinns who are attracted by long hair and pretty black eyes like yours. They may be tempted to carry you away!”

“কিছু মনে করো না, তবে তোমার চুলগুলি সূর্যাস্তের সময় ঢিলে করে ছেড়ে রাখা উচিত নয়। জিন নামে আত্মা রয়েছে যারা লম্বা চুল এবং তোমার মতো সুন্দর কালো চোখ দ্বারা আকৃষ্ট হয়। তারা তোমাকে প্রলোভন দেখিয়ে বয়ে বয়ে নিয়ে যেতে পারে!”

“How dreadful!” exclaimed Mulia, hurriedly tying a knot in her hair, and going indoors to be on the safe side.

“কত ভয়ানক!” মুলিয়া বলে উঠল, তাড়াতাড়ি তার চুলে একটি গিঁট বেঁধে, এবং নিরাপদ দিকে থাকতে বাড়ির ভিতরে চলে যায়।

Kamal, Anil and I sat on a string cot, facing Anil’s mother, who sat on another cot.

কমল, অনিল আর আমি একটা দড়ির খাটে বসেছিলাম অনিলের মায়ের মুখোমুখি, যিনি অন্য খাটের উপর বসে ছিলেন।

She was not much older than thirty-two, and had often been mistaken for Anil’s elder sister.

তিনি বত্রিশের চেয়ে বেশি বয়স্ক ছিলেন না, এবং অনিলের বড় বোন মনে করে প্রায়শই ভুল হয়েছিল।

“Can you see Jinns, aunty?” I asked.

“আপনি জিন দেখতে পেয়েছেন, আন্টি?” আমি জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম।

“Sometimes,” she said. “There was a Mathematics teacher in our locality, whose pupils were about the same age as you.

“কখনও কখনও,” সে বলল। “আমাদের এলাকায় একজন গণিতের শিক্ষক ছিলেন, যার ছাত্ররা তোমার একই বয়সের।

One of the boys was very good at his lessons.

ছেলেদের মধ্যে একজন তার পড়াশুনায় খুব ভাল ছিল।

One day, while he sat at his desk in a corner of the classroom, the teacher asked him to fetch a book from the cupboard which stood at the far end of the room.

একদিন, সে যখন ক্লাসরুমের এক কোণে তার ডেস্কে বসেছিল, তখন শিক্ষক তাকে আলমারী থেকে একটি বই আনতে বললেন, যা ঘরের খুব দূরের অংশে অবস্থিত ছিল।

The boy, who felt lazy that morning, didn’t move from his seat.

ছেলেটি, যে সকালে অলসতা অনুভব করেছিল, সে তার আসন থেকে সরে যায় না।

He merely stretched out his hand, took the book from the cupboard, and handed it to the teacher.

তিনি কেবল হাত বাড়িয়ে দিল, আলমারি থেকে বইটি নিয়ে শিক্ষক মশায়ের হাতে দিয়েছিল।

Everyone was astonished, because the boy’s arm had stretched about four yards before touching the book!

সবাই অবাক হয়ে গেল, কারণ ছেলেটি তার হাতটি বই ছোঁয়ার আগে প্রায় চার গজ বাড়িয়েছিল!

They realised that he was a Jinn; that was the reason for his being so good at games and exercises which required great agility.”

তারা বুঝতে পেরেছিল যে সে একটি জিন; এটাই ছিল খেলাধূলা এবং ব্যায়ামে তাঁর এত ভাল থাকার কারণ যার জন্য দুর্দান্ত চঞ্চলতার প্রয়োজন ছিল।

“Well, I wish I was a Jinn,”said Anil. “Especially for volleyball matches.”

“আচ্ছা, আমি আশা করি আমি জিন ছিলাম,” অনিল বলেছিলেন। “বিশেষত ভলিবল ম্যাচের জন্য।”

Anil’s mother then told us about Munjia, a mischievous ghost who lives in lonely peepul trees.

When a Munjia is annoyed, he rushes out from his tree and upsets tongas, bullock-carts and cycles.

Even a bus is known to have been upset by a Munjia.

“If you are passing beneath a peepul tree at night,” warned Anil’s mother, “be careful not to yawn without covering your mouth or snapping your fingers in front of it. If you don’t remember to do that, the Munjia will jump down your throat and completely ruin your digestion!”

“তুমি যদি রাতের বেলা কোনও পিপুল গাছের নীচে যাও,” অনিলের মাকে সতর্ক করে বললেন, “মুখ ঢেকে না রেখে বা আঙ্গুলগুলি তার সামনে না ছড়িয়ে না রেখে বা না কেটা সম্পর্কে সতর্ক থাকবে।যদি তুমি এটি করতে মনে না থাকে তবে মুঞ্জিয়া তোমার গলা থেকে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়বে এবং তোমার পাচনতন্ত্র সম্পূর্ণরূপে নষ্ট করবে!”

Let’s Continue 2nd Part:

In an attempt to change the subject, Kamal mentioned that a friend of his had found a snake in his bed one morning.

বিষয়টি পরিবর্তনের প্রয়াসে কমল উল্লেখ করেছিল যে তার এক বন্ধু একদিন সকালে তার বিছানায় একটি সাপ দেখতে পেয়েছিল।

“Did he kill it?” asked Anil’s mother anxiously.

“সে কি মেরে ফেলেছিল?” অনিলের মা উদ্বেগের সাথে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।

“No, it slipped away,” said Kamal. “Good,” she said. “It is lucky if you see a snake early in the morning.”

“না, সেটি পালিয়ে গেছিল,” কামাল বললেন। “ভাল,” তিনি বলেছিলেন। “তুমি খুব ভাগ্যবান যদি খুব সকালে একটি সাপ দেখতে পাও।”

“It won’t bite you if you let it alone,” she said.

“তুমি যদি এটিকে একা ছেড়ে দাও এটি তোমাকে কামড়ায় না,” তিনি বলেছিলেন।

By eleven o’clock, after we had finished our dinner and heard a few more ghost stories – including one about Anil’s grandmother, whose spirit paid the family a visit – Kamal and I were most reluctant to leave the company on the verandah and retire to the room which had been set apart for us.

It did not make us feel any better to be told by Anil’s mother that we should recite certain magical verses to keep away the more mischievous spirits.

এটি অনিলের মা এর দ্বারা আমাদের জানাতে আরও ভাল বোধ করতে পারেনি যে আরও দুষ্টু আত্মাকে দূরে রাখতে আমাদের কিছু নির্দিষ্ট যাদুবিদ্যার পাঠ করা উচিত।

We tried one, which went – Bhoot, prêt, pisach, dana Chhoo mantar, sab nikal jana… which, roughly translated, means – Ghosts, spirits, goblins, sprites, Away you fly, don’t come tonight…

আমরা একটি চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, যাতে বলা হয়েছিল – ভূত, প্রেত, পিসাচ, দানা ছোঁ মন্তর, সব নিকলা জানা … যার অর্থ মোটামুটি অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে, যার অর্থ – ভূত, আত্বা, অপদেবতা, পরী, উড়ে দূরে যাবে, আজ রাতে আসবেন না …

But the more we repeated the verse, the more uneasy we became, and when I got into bed (after carefully examining it for snakes), I couldn’t lie still, but kept twisting and turning and looking at the walls for moving shadows.

তবে আমরা যতই আয়াতটির পুনরাবৃত্তি করছিলাম, ততই আমরা অস্বস্তিতে পরিণত হয়েছি এবং যখন আমি বিছানায় উঠলাম (সাপের জন্য এটি যত্ন সহকারে পরীক্ষা করার পরে) আমি স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে থাকতে পারিনি, কিন্তূ মোচড় দিয়ে মোড় নেওয়ার জন্য এবং ঘোরানো এবং ছায়ার জন্য প্রাচীরের দিকে তাকিয়ে রইলাম।

Kamal attempted to raise our spirits by singing softly, but this only made the atmosphere more eerie.

কমল মৃদু গেয়ে আমাদের জীবনী শক্তি বাড়াতে চেষ্টা করেছিল, কিন্তু এটি কেবল পরিবেশকে আরও অদ্ভুত করে তুলেছিল।

After a while we heard someone knocking on the door, and the voices of Anil and the maidservant.

Getting up and opening the door, I found them looking pale and anxious.

They, too, had succeeded in frightening themselves as a result of Anil’s mother’s stories.

তারাও অনিলের মায়ের গল্পের ফলশ্রুতিতে নিজেকে আতঙ্কিত করতে সফল হয়েছিল।

“Are you all right?” asked Anil. “Wouldn’t you like to sleep in our part of the house? It might be safer. Mulia will help us to carry the beds across!”

অনিল জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “তুমি ঠিক আছ? “তুমি কি আমাদের বাড়ির অংশে ঘুমোতে পছন্দ করবে না? এটি আরও নিরাপদ হতে পারে। মুলিয়া আমাদের বিছানা নিয়ে  যেতে সহায়তা করবে!”

“We’re quite all right,” protested Kamal and I, refusing to admit we were nervous; but we were hustled along to the other side of the flat as though a band of ghosts was conspiring against us.

“আমরা বেশ ঠিক আছি,” প্রতিবাদ করে কামাল এবং আমি অস্বীকার করেছিলাম যে আমরা নার্ভাস ছিলাম; তবে আমরা ফ্ল্যাটের অপর পাশ দিয়ে তাড়াহুড়া করেছি যেন ভূতের একটি দল আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত্র করছে।

Anil’s mother had been absent during all this activity but suddenly we heard her screaming from the direction of the room we had just left.

এই সমস্ত ক্রিয়াকলাপের সময় অনিলের মা অনুপস্থিত ছিলেন তবে হঠাৎ আমরা কেবলমাত্র যে ঘরটি ফেলে এসেছি, তার দিক থেকে তার চিৎকার শুনতে পেয়েছিলাম।

“Rusty and Kamal have disappeared!” she cried. “Their beds have gone, too!”

“রুস্তি এবং কমল অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল!” তিনি চিৎকার করে বললেন, “তাদের বিছানাও গেছে!”

And then, when she came out on the verandah and saw us dashing about in our pyjamas, she gave another scream and collapsed on a cot.

After that, we didn’t allow Anil’s mother to tell us ghost stories at night.

One Night in an Old House

It was winter time. Once i was returning home from my friend’s house. Two of my friends were with me. On the way suddenly rain came. It was a lonely place. To save us from cold rain we took shelter in a house. The house was abandoned and preety old. Its doors and windows were broken. Every now and then various sounds were coming from everywhere. But the rain did not stop. So we waited and awoke till late night. It was almost midnight when we finally lost all hope and decided to sleep there somehow. We were afraid but we gathered courage and spent the night there.

A Magic Show

Last Sunday i went to see a magic show with my family. The magic show was held in a big field of our locality. The atmosphere inside the tent was majestic. Everybody was shouting, clapping and whistling. Suddenly wearing a shining dress with a long hat a magician entered and performed many tricks. Among all the tricks I liked the most “magic box”, “vanishing milk”, “the paper show”, “water of India”, “card game” etc. All of us were very excited to see his tricks. At the end of each trick we all clapped in joy. At the end of the show i tried to perform certain tricks by myself. But i was not as good as he was. I went to home in a jolly mood. I will never forget the experience of this magic show.
