The Tsar, the central character of the story unravels the plot of the story through the questions that came into his mind. Though the Tsar possessed ultimate power, he had shown respect to the wisdom of the hermit. He showed modesty in his approach when he went to meet the hermit in the guise of a common man. The patient nature of the Tsar was evident from the fact that he allowed the hermit as much time as he needed to answer his questions. The Tsar was sympathetic towards the feeble and exhausted hermit and the wounded man. Despite belonging to a royal family, the Tsar was hardworking. He dug two beds at a stretch. The sincerity and compassion of the Tsar while nursing the wounded man was praiseworthy. The change of heart in the Tsar’s enemy is an outcome of his generous and charitable nature. Even after being aware of the identity of the stranger as his enemy, the Tsar not only forgave him but also extended the hand of friendship. As the Tsar of a province, his search for knowledge was very thoughtful of him. The Tsar was a prudent man and a merciful ruler.
