Briefly describe the trail of Sir Mohan Lal’s thoughts as he sat waiting alone in his first-class waiting room. Class 11 | English (Karma) 6 Marks
Ans:
Since Sir Mohan Lal was travelling in a first class compartment, his heart warmed at the prospect of an impressive conversation with English officers who might travel with him in the same compartment. With an expressionless face, he would take out ‘The Times’ which always attracted Englishmen. While solving the puzzle, he would fold the paper in such a way so that the name would be visible to them. He thought perhaps someone would like to borrow it when he put it aside with a gesture signifying I’ve finished reading it. He expected somebody will surely notice his Balliol tie which would open up a floodgate of memories for him – Oxford colleges, tutors, boatraces and rugger matches. If both of these failed to catch their attention, he would summon his bearer for whisky, which never failed with Englishmen. He knew his gold cigarette case filled with English cigarettes would definitely invite conversations, which would help him to commune with his dear old England. He cherished the memory of those five years of glorious life in England – grey bags and gowns, sports blazers, mixed doubles, dinners at inns of Court and nights at Piccadilly. Sir Mohan Lal felt suffocated among his own people. He thought five years in England to be much more valuable than the forty-five years spent in India.
