That piece a wonder, now: Fra Pandolf’s hands
Worked busily a day, and there she stands.
Will ‘t please you sit and look at her? I said
“Fra Pandolf” by design, for never read
Strangers like you that pictured countenance,
The depth and passion of its earnest glance,
আমার শেষ পত্নী আছে আঁকা, ওই যে দেখুন দেয়াল পরে
জীবন্ত যেন সে আজও। আজ তাই তো বলি কণ্ঠ ভরে
বিস্ময়কর শিল্প বটে; ফ্রা প্যানডফের হাতের গুণে
উঠল গড়ে একটি দিনে, ওইখানেতে দেয়াল চুমে।
দয়া করে একটু উঠে দেখবেন না তাকে একবার? আমি বলি

The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)
And seemed as they would ask me, if they durst,

Fra Pandolf chanced to say, “Her mantle laps

A heart—how shall I say? too soon made glad,
Too easily impressed; she liked whate’er
She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.
Sir, ’twas all one! My favour at her breast,
The dropping of the daylight in the West,
The bough of cherries some officious fool
Broke in the orchard for her, the white mule
She rode with round the terrace—all and each
Would draw from her alike the approving speech,

অবোধের বাগানের ডাল ভেঙে দেওয়া চেরি,
তার সেই সাদা খচ্চর, ভ্রমণ করত যা চড়ি,
সব কিছু পেতো একই সাড়া, একই প্রত্যুত্তর,

Somehow—I know not how—as if she ranked
My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name
With anybody’s gift. Who’d stoop to blame
This sort of trifling? Even had you skill
In speech—(which I have not)—to make your will

Or that in you disgusts me; here you miss,
Or there exceed the mark”—and if she let
Herself be lessoned so, nor plainly set

নিজে থেকে করে সংশোধন, নতুবা বুদ্ধিতে দিয়ে শান
Her wits to yours, forsooth, and made excuse—
E’en then would be some stooping; and I choose
Never to stoop. Oh, sir, she smiled, no doubt,
Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without
Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands;
Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands
As if alive. Will’t please you rise? We’ll meet

যখনই যেতাম তার পাশ দিয়ে; কিন্তু কে বা গেছে ফিরে
বেড়ে দিলাম ওই হাসি আস্বাদ না করে? এটা গেল বেড়ে; দিলাম হুকুম জারি করে;
সব হাসি থেমে গেল চিরতরে; ওইখানে রয়েছে সে দেওয়াল পরে
যেন প্রাণবন্ত যে। উঠবেন কি এবার তবে? অপেক্ষায় রয়েছে যে

আপনার কাউন্টের সুনাম থাকুক অক্ষয়,
