Lady Lal, wife of Sir Mohan Lal, is a traditional Indian woman who is short, fat and in her mid-forties. She is dressed in a dirty white sari with a red border, She wears a diamond nose-ring and gold bangles and carries a silver betel leaf case. Due to her rustic nature, she carries a brass tiffin-carrier with cramped chapattis and mango pickle. She is not very quick and lifts her body into the compartment after applying some effort. She is a simple woman who loves to gossip and after finishing her meal, she wipes her hands and mouth with the loose end of her sari and emits loud belches. Her appearance suggests her unsophisticated nature which is completely opposite to her husband’s fake polishness. The dark side of her life is also revealed where she is ignored by her husband and has to stay aloof in the upper-storey of the house and make herself comfortable in the interclass zenana compartment, without her husband’s accompany.
