The conjugal life of Mohan Lal and Lady Lal was far from natural. They travelled in the same train but in different compartments, Lady Lal confined herself to the upper storey of the house while Mohan Lal lived in the ground floor. Lachmi’s incapability to grasp western culture diminished her value to her husband. Mohan Lal used to ill-treat his wife, occasionally paid visit to her at night and Lachmi obeyed her husband’s orders meekly. The smell of sweat and raw onions from her body made him despise her. Mohan Lal portrayed himself as her ‘master’ and to him Lachmi was the representative of dirty and vulgar Indians. Lachmi felt alone since the couple had no offspring. Therefore, the description of their conjugal life arouses pity for Lachmi and disgust for Mohan Lal in the readers’ mind.
