The line mentioned above is extracted from the short story ‘The Eyes Have It’. Yes, it was a hint for the girl to understand that the narrator was blind. But the girl failed to grasp the real meaning of the words. If she had been a bit more observant, she would have easily got the hint. But on the other hand the narrator interacted with the girl very tactfully and prevented her from knowing the truth.
Before stating this, the narrator thought that perhaps the girl had not noticed him because she was not paying attention. He thought that people who can see often overlook the essentials whereas those who cannot see or see very little take in every minute detail with the help of their other sense organs.
