Lachmi loved to gossip but failed to get a suitable partner to do so as her poor and illiterate relatives’ visit to her house was disliked by her husband. In the coolie, simple as she was, Lachmi found someone with whom she could communicate freely and get satisfactory answers. The coolie answered her queries as to where the zenana stopped and whether the train would be crowded or not. Then when she was busy in gulping down her meal, the coolie addressing Lachmi as ‘sister asked her whether she was travelling alone. Being addressed as “sister’, Lachmi reciprocated by calling him ‘brother and answered that she was with her ‘master’. She also added that her husband who was a vizier and a barrister, was travelling in the first class. Her inability to speak English and her rustic manner made her prefer the inter-class zenana compartment. It is to be noted that instead of blaming her husband she gives her own excuses for not accompanying him. We, the readers, can realise that through this conversation, her stored up emotions found vent.
