No I am with my master brother – Who is the master and who is the brother

No I am with my master brother – Who is the master and who is the brother”No, I am with my master, brother” – Who is the ‘master’ and who is the brother’? What else did the speaker say about the ‘master’? Bring out the irony hidden in the line.
Or, What reason was cited by Lachmi for not travelling in the same compartment with her husband ?
Or, “I am with my master.”-What was the name of the master? What kind of personality of the woman is expressed through this line ?

Ans:

Lachmi said that she was travelling with her husband whom she considered to be her master. She also confessed that his husband was a vizier and a barrister and since he loved to communicate with the English officers; he travelled in the first class and was waiting for the train in the first class waiting room. On the other hand, Lachmi travelled in the inter-class zenana compartment because she failed to grasp the mannerisms of the so-called upper class people.

Irony lies in the fact that Lachmi failed to associate the word ‘husband with Sir Mohan Lal. She never received the respect of a wife as Mohan Lal despised Lachmi’s native nature. But Lachmi, did not intend to demean her husband. Instead, she told the coolie that she preferred to remain aloof as she feared that her failure to be a sophisticated wife, would harm her husband’s reputation and honour.
