RAGGING
Ragging is a social evil, a curse in the educational institutions. The senior students of some of these institutions inflict humiliating and inconsiderate treatment on newly arrived students in the name of toughening them up and initiating them into the main stream of the students of the respective institutions. The menace of ragging, which has newly gained its cruel nature is mostly found in colleges and hostels. This is actually a vile and harmful practice for which the helpless new students are made to suffer, without any rhyme or reason. They are forced to face the sadistic activities of some senior students and have to go through the ordeal of ragging. The freshers are tormented by the senior students to such an extent that they, more often than not, are forced to discontinue their studies. Ragging is reported to be severe particularly in Medical and Engineering colleges.
Ragging has far-reaching consequences. The victims often suffer from severe trauma and on many occasions, even commit suicide. It is unfortunate that, many a time the governing bodies of the academic institutions are found to be indifferent to the incidents of ragging. Exemplary punishment should be meted out to those who attempt or remain involved in ragging. Government should take strict actions against these activities. Academic institutions should ensure proper atmosphere for studies by setting up anti-ragging cells where each student can freely speak their mind. Otherwise, the very backbone of the society will be gradually weakened and our country will suffer a huge setback in future.
