THE DANGERS OF PLASTIC PRODUCTS
One of the gravest environmental hazards that we are presently facing is the use of plastic products. The rampant and indiscriminate use of plastic bags over the years has posed a big threat to the eco-system and environment. It is one of the major sources of pollution in the world. These bags which are used to carry various items including daily groceries, fish, vegetables, etc have replaced jute and cotton bags of the earlier times. These bags are not eco-friendly as these are non-biodegradable and hence, cannot be recycled. These cannot be burnt because of the poisonous gases they emit. So, we find polythene bag clogging the drains and causing extreme damage to the sewage system of any city. The pipes and canals are also blocked resulting in the menace of water-logging in the streets, during rains. With time, these also contaminate soil and water. The health experts have repeatedly sounded warning against the carcinogenic and poisonous substances that polythene products contain. The Government has launched wide-spread awareness campaign against the use of polythene bags. Laws are also enacted to check the use. Recently, the use of polythene bags and plastic cups which are less than 40 micron in thickness, is banned. Unfortunately, laws alone cannot put an end to the use of plastics unless people themselves are conscious about the far-reaching damage that it causes.
