THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE
Points: Hare and tortoise—hare ridicules tortoise for his slow speed—the tortoise challenges the hare to a race— the race starts—the hare much ahead-takes a nap—sleeps for a long time-rises from his sleep—surprised to see tortoise win.
Once there lived a hare and a tortoise. The hare had the habit of mocking the slow pace of tortoise. The hare would say, “You lazy creature, how slowly you crawl!” The tortoise felt pinched one day and challenged him to a race. The race started and the tortoise set off slowly but steadily. The hare started late and covered the distance that the tortoise had covered with a few jumps and even moved ahead of him. When he could not see the tortoise who was lagging behind, he thought of having a little rest. With this thought he started enjoying a nap. Meanwhile the tortoise reached the spot. He saw the hare sleeping and went on to complete the race. After some time the hare woke up and was surprised to find the tortoise already beyond the victory post. The tortoise won the race. The hare’s pride brought about his downfall.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race./Pride comes before a fall.
খরগােশ আর কচ্ছপ
একসময় একটি খরগােশ আর একটি কচ্ছপ বাস করত। খরগােশটির অভ্যাসই ছিল কচ্ছপের ধীর গতি নিয়ে উপহাস করা। খরগােশটি বলত, “ওহে অলস জীব, কীরকম ধীরে, গুটিগুটি পায়ে। তুমি হাঁট!” একদিন কচ্ছপটি টিপ্পনীটাকে গায়ে মেখে তাকে দৌড়ে চ্যালেঞ্জ জানাল। দৌড় শুরু হলে, কচ্ছপটি ধীর কিন্তু সমান গতিতে রওনা দিল। খরগােশ দেরি করে রওনা দিল এবং কচ্ছপ যতটা পথ এগিয়ে গিয়েছিল তা সে কয়েক লাফে পেরিয়ে গিয়ে তার থেকে আরও এগিয়ে গেল। তার থেকে অনেকটা পিছিয়ে পড়া কচ্ছপকে সে যখন আর দেখতে পেল না তখন সে মনস্থ করল একটু বিশ্রাম নেবে। এই ভাবনা নিয়ে সে একটা ছােট্ট ঘুম দিতে লাগল। ইতিমধ্যে, কচ্ছপ ওই জায়গায় পৌছে গেল। সে খরগােশকে ঘুমােতে দেখল এবং দৌড় শেষ করার জন্য চলতেই থাকল। কিছু। সময় পরে খরগােশ জেগে উঠে অবাক হয়ে দেখল কচ্ছপ জেতার জায়গায় পৌঁছে গেছে। কচ্ছপ দৌড় প্রতিযােগিতা জিতে নিল। খরগােশের অহংকার তার পতনের কারণ হল।
