What idea do you get about the characters of Jim and Bill Class 11 | English (Karma) 6 Marks
Ans:
Throughout the story, Sir Mohan Lal considered the Englishmen as distinguished, efficient, well mannered and full of etiquette. But Jim and Bill broke his notion. They appeared almost at the end of the story, trudging along with haversacks slung behind them, under the influence of alcohol and walking unsteadily. They were looking for room in the compartments. When they entered the firstclass coupe, they immediately showed their narrow nationalism and chauvinism by addressing Sir Mohan as ‘nigger’. Being British soldiers, they should have been disciplined, decent and well-mannered. But, they behaved in just the opposite way. They crossed all limits of humanity when they threw Sir Mohan out of the compartment along with his belongings. Thus, they displayed bad breeding and immense hatred for the Indians.
