Langston Hughes portrays through “Thank You Ma’am” that how a small boy turns into a thief out of need. The story highlights how we fall prey to our temptation and often indulge in unfair means to fulfil our desires. But the other character in the story, Mrs Jones, makes the boy aware of the fact that how things earned by devilish means will burn one’s peace. The brief encounter between Mrs Jones and Roger turns out to be a boon for the young lad because he understands the importance of hard work and learns to differentiate. Mrs Jones’ motherly affection and sensitive nature brings a positive change in Roger. He realises that earning through honest means is the right way of living life. Mrs Jones’ selfless attitude moves Roger so much that he becomes dumbfounded not knowing what to say. Therefore through “Thank You Ma’am” we learn how love can reform a sinner.
