This trait plays a prominent role in the story through Sir Mohan’s character who tries to earn favour of the British by adopting their ways. Besides, this story also shows the author’s brilliance in choosing proper diction. His style of writing is lucid and reveals his craftsmanship in using irony and symbols. The irony of fate is unveiled as the position of Sir Mohan and his wife is reversed at the end. It is also ironical that Sir Mohan, who, by imitating the Englishmen, wanted to become one of them, at the end stands on the same platform with all the other Indians. The mirror is also an important symbol used to indicate the unsophisticated nature and natural aspect of the Indians. Through the smile of the mirror, the author actually satirises people like Sir Mohan. Thus, through irony, symbols and subtle diction, the author depicts the truth that infidelity towards one’s own culture always results in downfall.
