Date and Place of birth : 19th January, 1935, Mirzapur street (now Surya Sen St.) in Kolkata. Education : Howrah Zilla School, City College, Kolkata (Honours in Bengali): University of Calcutta (M. A. in Bengali) special interest: Threatre since school life/ learnt acting from Ahindra Chowdhury; influenced by Sisir Bhaduri to become an actor. Career: announcer, in All India Radio-debut film Roy’s ‘Apur Sansar’ (1959)-acted in fourteen films-protrayed the characters of Feluda in ‘Sonar Kella’ (1974) and Joi Baba Felunath’ (1979) also worked with Mrinal sen, Tapan Sinha, Rituparno Ghosh, Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghosh etc. acted in award- winning film ‘Kony’ (1986)-worked in more than 350 films-maintained a busy schedule in the threatre since 2010, performed the lead role in ‘Raja Lear’ directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay. Awards: Officer des Arts et Metiers, in 1999 by The French Govt. Padma Bhushan in 2004, Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012 three National Film Awards in 1991, 2000 and 2006, Legion d’Honneur in 2017 by the French Govt. etc. Death: 15th November, 2020 in Kolkata.

Soumitra Chatterjee was the legendary Bengali actor, who showed his versatality in the field of film. He was born on 19 January, 1925 at Mirzapur street (Now Surya Sen street) in Kolkata. He studied at Howrah Zilla school; city college, Kolkata (Hons in Bengali) and university of Calcutta (MA in Bengli). He had special interest in threatre since school life. He learnt acting from Ahindra Chowdhury and was influenced by Sisir Bhaduri to become an actor. He started his career as an announcer All india Radio. His first film was ‘Apur Sansar’ (1959). He acted in fourteen films drected by Stayajit Ray. He portrayed the character of Feluda in ‘Sonar Kella’ and Joi Baba Felunath’ He also worked with Mrinal sen, Tapan Sinha, Goutam Ghose, Aparna Sen, Rituparna Ghosh etc. People still remember his acting in the award winning film ‘Kony’ (1986). He workd in 350 films in total. He also maintained a busy schedule in theatre. Since 2010 the performed the leading role in ‘Raja Lear’ directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay. He received many awards like office des Arts et Metiers (1999) by the French Govt, Padma Bhushan (2004), Dada Sahed Falke Award (2012) three National Filk Award (1991, 2000, 2006) Legion d’Honneur (2017) by the French Govt, etc. The great actor died on 15 November, 2020 in Kolkata.
