“You could of asked me.”- Who said the quoted words? When did the speaker say this? What was its impact upon the person spoken to? Class 12 | English (Thank You Maam) 6 Marks
Ans:
The quoted words were said by Mrs Jones to Roger.
When Mrs. Jones expressed her assumption that Roger must have been hungry which prompted him to make an attempt of snatching her purse, he defended his misdeed by saying that he wanted to buy a pair of blue suede shoes. At this, Mrs Jones remarked that the boy could have just asked her for the money.
Roger obviously did not expect such a reply from Mrs. Jones. This rare show of generosity and affection moved him deeply. He stood confused because he did not expect that the person whose purse he tried to steal would offer him money for buying the shoes of his choice. He was at a complete loss. This remark of Mrs Jones made quite an impact upon Roger as he got to see the tender heart of the woman which remained hidden under her stern exterior.
