Ans:

Sir Mohan Lal and Lachmi were poles apart in their attitude towards life. Mohan Lal studied at the Balliol College, Oxford and for that matter, he acquired the manners and cultures of the British. He could talk on any subject like books, politics and people and rarely spoke to the native people. And when he did, he spoke in anglicised Hindustani. He considered himself superior to his native people and always desired the company of the English aristocrats. But, his polished manners and perfect accent could not save him from the humiliation, he suffered at the hands of the two English soldiers and this incident is ironical against his show-off.

On the other hand, Lachmi, Mohan Lal’s wife, was a simple woman who accepted herself as she really was. She knew that her husband did not like her as she could not speak English and was unable to behave like a sophisticated lady. But she did not have any regret regarding this. She was friendly in nature and shared her family issues with the outsiders. Unlike Mohan Lal, she was pleasing and acceptable to everybody.
