Though Sir Mohan was eager to have Englishmen as his co-passengers, he never expressed his desire to talk to them. He went about his business with an expressionless face. He would move to the corner and take out a copy of ‘The Times’ which always attracted the attention of his Co-passengers. He solved the crossword puzzle as a display of his knowledge of English vocabulary. The name of the paper would be displayed properly with the intention of getting someone interested in it. He would also smoothen his Balliol tie – symbol of the Balliol College, Oxford. If both of these failed to create any impression on the targeted persons, he would summon his bearer and order the whisky which never failed with Englishmen. Finally, he thought, his gold cigarette case full of English cigarettes would trigger the Englishmen’s interest. He gave much effort to impress his English co-passengers in order to have a nice conversation and revive the memories associated with his dear old England.
