Our country has produced a lot of great personalities. Amartya Sen is one of them. Amartya Sen, a great economist, was born in present Bangladesh on 3 November, 1933. Prof. Ashutosh Sen and Mrs Amita Sen were his parents. He had his early education in Santiniketan and then in Presidency College and Calcutta University. He completed his Ph.D from Cambridge and joined as a Professor of Economics in Jadavpur University (1956-58). This great economist has taught at Delhi University, London School of Economics, Oxford University, Harvard University and Trinity College, Cambridge. He is a great scholar and thinker. He is the first Asian Nobel Laureate in Economics (1998). He wrote many books on Welfare Economics. Some of his notable books are “Growth Economics’ (1970), ‘On Economic Inequality’ (1973), ‘Poverty and Famines’ (1981), etc. It is due to him that India is trying to achieve wonderful feats in the field of Welfare Economics. আমাদের দেশ বহু মহান ব্যক্তিত্বের জন্ম দিয়েছে। অমর্ত্য সেন তাদের অন্যতম। বিশিষ্ট অর্থনীতিবিদ অমর্ত্য সেন অধুনা বাংলাদেশে ১৯৩৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ৩ নভেম্বর জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন। প্রফেসার আশুতােষ সেন ও শ্রীমতী অমিতা সেন ছিলেন তার বাবা ও মা। শান্তিনিকেতনে প্রাথমিক শিক্ষা লাভ করার পর তিনি প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজ ও কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়াশােনা করেন। তিনি কেমব্রিজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পি এইচ. ডি. ডিগ্রি লাভ করার পর যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অর্থনীতির অধ্যাপক হিসেবে যােগ দেন (১৯৫৬-৫৮)। এই মহান অর্থনীতিবিদ দিল্লি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে, লন্ডন স্কুল অভ ইকনমিএ, অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে, হাভার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এবং কেমব্রিজের ট্রিনিটি কলেজে পড়িয়েছেন। তিনি একজন মহান পণ্ডিত এবং চিন্তাবিদ। এশীয় হিসেবে তিনি অর্থনীতিতে প্রথম নােবেল পুরস্কার (১৯৯৮) লাভ করেন। কল্যাণকামী অর্থনীতির ওপর তিনি বহু বই লিখেছেন। তাঁর রচিত কয়েকটি উল্লেখযােগ্য বই হল ‘গ্রোথ ইকনােমিক্স’ (১৯৭০), ‘অন ইকনােমিক ইনইকোয়ালিটি’ (১৯৭৩), ‘পভার্টি অ্যান্ড ফ্যামিনস’ (১৯৮১) ইত্যাদি। মূলত তার জন্যই ভারত কল্যাণকামী অর্থনীতিতে উল্লেখযােগ্য কৃতিত্বলাভের চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। আমরা এই বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তির জন্য সত্যি সত্যিই গর্ব অনুভব করি।
