About the The Poet And Poem :
Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimband (1854-1891) was a French poet from the nineteenth century. He started writing poetry even before he reached his teens. He stopped writing poetry at the age of nineteen. His major works include To Music, Evening prayer. The present poem, originally titled Le Dormeur le Val, was included in his collection of poetry called, Poesis (1872).
This poem is written in the model of the Italian sonnet that has fourteen lines divided as octave and sestet. The poet explores the inherent futility of war. This theme is expressed in the contrasting images of a bountiful nature as background and the tragic death of a young soldier in the midst of nature’s splendour.

জিন নিকোলাস আর্থার রিমব্যান্ড (১৮৫৪-১৮৯১) উনিশ শতকের এক ফরাসি কবি ছিলেন। কৈশোরে পৌঁছানোর আগেই তিনি কবিতা লেখা শুরু করেছিলেন। উনিশ বছর বয়সে তিনি কবিতা লেখা বন্ধ করেছিলেন। তাঁর প্রধান রচনাগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে ‘সংগীত,’ ‘সন্ধ্যা প্রার্থনা’। মূলত ‘Le Dormeur le Val’ নামে শিরোনামের বর্তমান কবিতাটি তাঁর ‘Poesis (1872)’ কবিতা সংকলনে অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল।
এই কবিতাটি ইতালীয় সনেটের মডেলে রচিত যা চৌদ্দটি পঙক্তি অষ্টক এবং ষট্ক হিসাবে বিভক্ত। কবি যুদ্ধের অন্তর্নিহিত নিরর্থকতার বিশ্লেষণ করেন। এই রচনার বিষয়বস্তু পটভূমি হিসাবে উদার প্রকৃতির বিপরীত চিত্র এবং প্রকৃতির জাঁকজমকের মধ্যে একটি তরুণ সৈন্যের মর্মান্তিক মৃত্যুতে প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে।
SUMMARY (সারসংক্ষেপ) :
In the poem, Rimbaud holds up his first hand experience of war. The poem begins with a description of the serene beauty of nature’s bounty in a green valley. Subsequently, Rimbaud goes on to describe the tragic death of a soldier lying among the heavy undergrowth. In an ironic tone, the poet describes the calm and peace which envelops the soldier in his death. The poem creates a shock as the imagery passes from pictures of nature’s fruition to the image of cold death. The irony comes out strongly as the poet unfolds the presence of a dead body in the midst of a beautiful, idyllic scene. This emphasises the notion of death in the middle of life. It is the intention of the poet to underline the futility manifest in war.

কবিতায়, রিম্বাড যুদ্ধের প্রত্যক্ষ অভিজ্ঞতা তুলে ধরেছেন। কবিতাটি সবুজ উপত্যকায় প্রকৃতির অনুগ্রহে প্রশান্ত সৌন্দর্যের বর্ণনা দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে। পরবর্তীকালে, রিম্বাড ঘন লতাগুল্মের জঙ্গলের মধ্যে পড়ে থাকা একজন সৈনিকের করুণ মৃত্যু বর্ণনা করেছেন। বিদ্রূপাত্মক সুরে, কবি নিস্তব্ধতা ও শান্তির বর্ণনা দিয়েছেন যা সৈনিককে তার মৃত্যুতে ঢেকে দেয়। চিত্রকল্পসমূহ প্রকৃতির সার্থকতার ছবিগুলি থেকে শীতল মৃত্যুর প্রতিচ্ছবিতে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে একটি আঘাত দেয়। বিদ্রূপগুলি দৃ ঢ় ভাবে প্রকাশিত হয় যখন কবি একটি সুন্দর, সরল শান্ত ও মনোরম দৃশ্যের মাঝে একটি মৃতদেহের উপস্থিতি প্রকাশ করেন। এটি জীবনের মাঝখানে মৃত্যুর ধারণার উপর গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে়। যুদ্ধের নিরর্থকতা প্রকাশকে গুরুত্ব আরোপ করাই ছিল কবির উদ্দেশ্য।

একটি ছোট সবুজ উপত্যকা যেখানে ধীরগতিতে নদী প্রবাহিত হয়
And leaves long strands of silver on the bright

Grass; from the mountain top stream the Sun’s

A soldier, very young, lies open-mouthed,

Is like an infant’s – gentle, without guile.
হ’ল এক শিশুর মতো – মৃদু, অকপট।
Ah, Nature, keep him warm; he may catch cold.
আঃ, প্রকৃতি, তাকে উষ্ণ রাখ; তাকে ঠান্ডা লাগতে পারে
The humming insects don’t disturb his rest;
গুনগুনকারী পোকামাকড় তার বিশ্রামে তাকে বিরক্ত করো না;
He sleeps in sunlight, one hand on his breast;
সে সূর্যের আলোতে ঘুমায়, তার এক হাত তার বক্ষে;
At peace. In his side there are two red holes.
