Sub: Why plastic carry bags should be banned

Sir, With humble prayer I want to share my anxiety related to the dangers of plastic carry bags. Hope my letter will get a little place in your editorial column. 

   We are searching for cost friendly material for our benefit. So, we have forgotten earthen pots, paper bags, jute bags, etc. Everywhere there is the plastic. We have started to use it in every purpose. A number of plastic bags are floating here and there. But the problem created by them is alarming. Those are choking the sewerage system. So, in rainy season roads become waterlogged. Drains overflow spreading foul smell and causing dangerous pollution. When plastic is left on land it makes the land infertile. It separates the upper and lower level of soils. In the sea and ocean it creates danger for the sea animals. Some of the sea animals are already on the way to extinction because of such kind of pollution. So, without wasting any further time, plastic must be banned by imposing strict law. Then only we can save our environment. At the same time, substitute eco-friendly materials like jute and paper should be used for making bags.

মহাশয়, বিনম্র অনুরােধের সাথে আমি প্লাস্টিক ব্যাগের বিপদ নিয়ে আমার উদবেগ ভাগ করে নিতে চাই। আশা করি আপনার সম্পাদকীয় স্তম্ভে আমার চিঠিটি একটি ছােটো স্থান পাবে। আমরা আমাদের লাভের জন্য কম দামি জিনিসের খোঁজ করি। তাই আমরা মাটির পাত্র, কাগজের থলি, জুটের থলি ইত্যাদির কথা ভুলেই গেছি। সব জায়গায় শুধু প্লাস্টিক। প্রতিটি কাজে আমরা এটি ব্যবহার করা শুরু করেছি। অজস্র প্লাস্টিক ব্যাগ যেখানে-সেখানে ভেসে বেড়াচ্ছে। কিন্তু এগুলাে যে সমস্যার সৃষ্টি করছে তা আতঙ্কজনক। এগুলাে নালা বুজিয়ে দিচ্ছে। তাই বর্ষাকালে রাস্তায় জল জমে যায়। নর্দমা উপচে গিয়ে দুর্গন্ধ ছড়ায় আর মারাত্মক দূষণের সৃষ্টি করে। যখন মাটিতে প্লাস্টিক পড়ে থাকে এটা মাটিকে অনুর্বর করে তােলে। এটি মাটির ওপর ও নীচের স্তরকে আলাদা করে দেয়। সাগর ও মহাসাগরে জলজ প্রাণীদের জন্য এটি বিপদের সৃষ্টি করে। এইরকম দূষণের কারণে বেশ কিছু জলজ প্রাণী এখন বিলুপ্তির পথে। তাই আর সময় নষ্ট না করে কঠোর আইন জারি করে প্লাস্টিক অবশ্যই নিষিদ্ধ করতে হবে। তাহলেই আমরা আমাদের পরিবেশকে রক্ষা করতে পারব। একইসাথে, ব্যাগ বানানাের জন্য বিকল্প পরিবেশবান্ধব বস্তু যেমন জুট ও কাগজ অবশ্যই ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
