The poet and the text :

Jane Hyatt Yolen (Born in 1939) is an American author and editor of folklore, fantasy, science fiction, and children’s books. She has written over 280 books, the best known of which are The Holocaust Novella and The Devil’s Arithmetic. The present text is an edited version of her popular short story of the same name.

Let’s Read :- 

There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea. “Child, what do you know of sailing?” she would say. “You’re a farmer’s son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea.” 

একবার এক ছেলে ছিল যে নাবিক হতে চেয়েছিল কিন্তূ তাঁর মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দিতেন না। “বাছা, তুমি জলপথে ন্রমণ করা সম্পর্কে কী জানো?” তিনি বলতেন। “তুমি একজন কৃষকের ছেলে, তুমি ঋতু গুলির পরিবর্তন সম্পর্কে জান এবং মাটির গন্ধ জান তবে তুমি সমুদ্র সম্পর্কে জান না।”

Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother. So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.

এখান যে ছেলেটির নাম জোন ছিল সে সবসময় তার মায়ের কথা মেনে চলত। তাই সে ভারী মন নিয়ে তার খামারের কাজে গিয়েছিল কিন্তু সমুদ্রের কথা আর বলে নি।

One day, he had been walking behind the plough. He all but ran over a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt. He picked the turtle up and set it on his head where he knew it would be safe. When he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head. To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed.

একদিন সে লাঙলের পিছনে পিছনে হাঁটছিল। সে সমস্ত কিন্তু ময়লার ঢেলার উপর একটি ছোট সবুজ কচ্ছপের উপর চাপা দিয়ে এগিয়ে যায়। সে কচ্ছপটি তুলে তার মাথায় রাখে যেখানে সে জানতো যে এটি নিরাপদ হবে। যখন তিনি লাঙ্গল দিয়ে কাজ শেষ করেছিল, জন কচ্ছপটি  তার মাথা থেকে টেনে তুলেছিল। তাঁর অবাক বিস্ময়ে সে দেখতে পেল যে এটি একটি ক্ষুদ্র সবুজ মানুষ পরী রূপে রূপান্তরিত হয়েছে যা তাঁর তালুতে দাঁড়িয়ে মাথা নত করে।

“I thank you for your kindness, tell me your heart’s desire and I’ll grant it to you for saving my life,” said the fairy. Jon bowed back but said nothing. Although his heart yearned to go out to the sea, he did not express his wish.

“আমি তোমার দয়া দেখানোর জন্য তোমাকে ধন্যবাদ জানাই, তোমার হৃদয়ের আকাঙ্ক্ষা বল এবং আমি আমার জীবন বাঁচানোর জন্য তোমাকে এটি প্রদান করব,” পরী বলল। জন পিছনে মাথা নিচু করে কিছু বলল না। যদিও তার হৃদয় সমুদ্রের দিকে বেরোনোর জন্য আকুল ছিল, সে তার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করে নি।

The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, “I see you wish to go sailing”. Jon’s face answered for him.

সবুজ পরী লোকটি সহজেই হৃদয় পড়তে পারে তাই তিনি বলেছিল, “আমি দেখছি তুমি নৌকোয় করে জলপথে ভ্রমণ করতে চাও”। জনের মুখমণ্ডল তার জন্য জবাব দিল।

Let’s Read – 2 :- 

“Since you put me on your head like a hat to keep me safe, I shall give you a different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire. A cap full of wind. But there’s one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off.”

“যেহেতু তুমি আমাকে সুরক্ষিত রাখতে একটা টুপির মতো তোমার মাথার উপর রেখেছিলে, আমি তোমাকে তার পরিবর্তে একটা অন্য ধরণের টুপি দেব, যেটি নাবিকদের সর্বাধিক আকাঙ্ক্ষিত। একটি টুপি বাতাসে পূর্ণ। তবে একটি হুঁশিয়ারি আছে, কোনও মানুষের হাতই এটি খুলে নিতে সক্ষম হবে না।”

Then with a blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving a striped cap behind. Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother.

তারপরে এক ঝলক দিয়ে, পরী লোকটি একটি ডোরাকাটা টুপি পিছনে রেখে অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল। যুবক জন মাথায় ক্যাপটি রাখল এবং মাকে জানাতে বাড়ি ছুটে গেল।

“No good will come of the wind cap,” she said.  But the lad would have none of her cautions. The very next day, putting on the sailor’s cap, he ran off to the sea. On seeing a ship anchored near the shore, he requested the captain to take him along. Thus began his first ever sea voyage! 

হাওয়া টুপি থেকে কোনও ভালই আসবে না,” তিনি বলেছিলেন। তবে ছেলেটির কোনও সতর্কতা নেই। ঠিক পরের দিন, নাবিকের টুপি পড়ে সে ছুটে গেলেন সমুদ্রের দিকে। উপকূলে একটি জাহাজ নোঙ্গর করা দেখে সে ক্যাপ্টেনকে অনুরোধ করল তিনি যেন তাকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে যান। এভাবেই তাঁর প্রথম সমুদ্র যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল!

Well, the wind cap worked as the fairy had said but that one condition prevailed! Now that was both bad and good. It was bad because Jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at bedtime. And it was good because neither could he lose the cap nor could it be stolen from him.

ঠিক আছে, পরী যেমনটি বলেছিল উইন্ড ক্যাপটি তেমনই কাজ করেছিল তবে সেখানে একটি শর্ত ছিল! এখন ওটি খারাপ এবং ভাল উভয় ছিল। এটি খারাপ ছিল কারণ জন তার ক্যাপ্টেনের সামনে বা শোবার সময় তার টুপিটি খুলে ফেলতে পারছিল না। এবং এটি ভাল ছিল কারণ সে ক্যাপটি হারাতে পারতো না এবং এটি তার কাছ থেকে চুরিও হত না।

Since it was wind that sailors called for, and wind that Jon could supply he soon became very popular. When he twisted the cap he could summon the east wind and the west wind. He could also turn it to call both the north as well as the south wind. The captain would therefore never part with his prized sailor and let him ashore.

যেহেতু এটি সেই বাতাস নাবিকরা যে বাতাসের আহ্বান করেছিল, এবং এই বাতাস যা জন সরবরাহ করতে পারে সে শীঘ্রই খুব জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠল। সে যখন টুপিটি মোচড় দিত তখন সে পূর্ব বাতাস এবং পশ্চিম বাতাসকে ডেকে আনতে পারেন। উত্তরের পাশাপাশি দক্ষিণ বাতাস উভয়কেই ডাকতে সে এটিকে ঘোরতেও পারত। অধিনায়ক তাই কখনও তার অসাধারণ নাবিকের সঙ্গ ত্যাগ করতে চাইতেন না এবং তাকে উপকূলে যেতে দেবেন না।

For a year and a day, young Jon did not set foot on land. He saw nothing but the churning of the waves. Soon there grew in his heart a strong desire to see the land. 

এক বছর এবং এক দিন ধরে, যুবক জোন মাটিতে পা রাখেনি। সে ঢেউয়ের আলোড়ন ছাড়া তিনি কিছুই দেখেনি। শীঘ্রই তার অন্তরে স্থলভূমি দেখার প্রবল ইচ্ছা জাগে।

Let’s Read – 3 :- 

“Oh, let me go ashore just for one day,” he begged the captain when they had sighted land. He promised he would return but the captain was unmoved. However, Jon could not stop dreaming of the land.

“ওহ, আমাকে কেবল একদিনের জন্য উপকূলে যেতে দিন,” সে ক্যাপ্টেনকে অনুরোধ করল যখন তারা স্থলভূমি দেখতে পেল। সে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিল যে সে ফিরে আসবে তবে অধিনায়ক অনড় ছিলেন। যাই হোক, জন স্থলভূমির স্বপ্ন দেখা বন্ধ করতে পারেনি।

One quiet afternoon, he lay fast asleep and fell to dreaming again. Unknown to him, the ship stood offshore from his old farm. In Jon’s dream the seasons turned rapidly and as each turned, so did Jon in his bed. Consequently, the cap on his head twisted round and about. It called up a squall from the clear sky that hit the ship without a warning.

এক শান্ত বিকেলে, তিনি গভীর ঘুমে ছিল এবং আবারও স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করল। তার অজান্তেই, জাহাজটি তার পুরানো খামার থেকে একটু দূরে সমুদ্রে দাঁড়িয়েছিল। জনের স্বপ্নে ঋতুগুলি দ্রুত পরিবর্তিত হতে লাগল এবং প্রত্যেকটি যেমন পরিবর্তিত হচ্ছিল, তেমনি জন তার বিছানায় এপাশ-ওপাশ করতে লাগল। ফলস্বরূপ, তার মাথার টুপিটি এদিক-ওদিক মুচড়ে যাচ্ছিল। এটি পরিষ্কার আকাশ থেকে একটি ঝড়ো বাতাস ডেকে আনল, যেটা কোনও সতর্কতা ছাড়াই জাহাজটির উপর আছড়ে পড়ল।

The wind had been whirling about the boat tearing the sails and snapping the spars. “It’s his fault,” the sailors cried. They shouted in anger and fear and tried to rip the cap off his head.

বাতাস জাহাজটির চারিদিকে ঘুরতে শুরু করেছিল পাল ছিঁড়ে ফেলছিল এবং মাস্তুলগুলি সশব্দে ভেঙে ফেলেছিল। “এটা তার দোষ,” নাবিকরা চিত্‍কার করে বললেন। তারা রাগে এবং ভয়ে চেঁচিয়ে উঠল এবং তার মাথা থেকে টুপিটি টেনে খুলে ফেলতে চেষ্টা করছিল।

Well, they were unsuccessful, for it was a fairy cap. They pulled it and twisted it and so the squall became a storm, the mightiest they had ever seen. The captain ordered his men to bring Jon before him. In anger, he grabbed him by the tail of his striped cap, twisted him thrice and flung him out to the sea. But the winds called up by the cap spun the ship three times around.

যাই হোক, তারা ব্যর্থ হয়েছিল, কারণ এটি ছিল একটি পরীর দেওয়া টুপি। তারা এটিকে ধরে টানতে লাগল ও মোচড় দিল এবং এর ফলে ওই ঝোড়ো বাতাসটি একটি জোরালো ঝড়ে পরিণত হয়ে গেল, সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী যা তারা কখনও দেখেনি। ক্যাপ্টেন তাঁর লোকদের জনকে তাঁর সামনে আনার আদেশ দিলেন। রাগে তিনি জনের ডোরাকাটা টুপিটির লেজটি ধরে তাকে তিনবার পাক দিয়ে সমুদ্রের দিকে ফেলে দিলেন। কিন্তূ টুপিটির দ্বারা ডাকা বাতাসগুলি জাহাজটিকে তিনবার পাক খাওয়াল।

As Jon went under the waves, the cap came off his head. Soon the storm stopped, and Jon swam ashore. The cap followed him. When he got to the land, Jon picked up the cap and ran home to his mother and farm.

যেহেতু জন ঢেউগুলির তলায় চলে গিয়েছিল, টুপিটি তার মাথা থেকে খুলে গেল। শীঘ্রই ঝড় থামল, এবং জন সাঁতরে তীরে  গেল। টুপিটি তাঁকে অনুসরণ করল। যখন সে স্থলভাগে পৌঁছল, জন টুপিটি নিল এবং দৌড়ে বাড়ি গেল তার ময়ের কাছে এবং খামারে।

Again in the winter, when the snow lay heavy on the fields, he began to dream of the sea.Jon went to the wardrobe, got out the fairy cap and stared at it for a long moment. Tucking it in his shirt, he ran out to the field. He placed the wind cap under a stone where he knew the fairy man would find it. Then he left again for the seas.

আবার শীতকালে, যখন মাঠে ভারী তুষার পড়েছিল, তখন সে সাগরের স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করে। জন তার জামা কাপড় রাখার আলমারির দিকে গেল, পরীর দেওয়া টুপিটি বের করল এবং সেটির দিকে অনেকক্ষণ একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে রইল। এটিকে নিজের ভিতরে চেপে ধরে সে দৌড়ে মাঠে দিকে গেল। তিনি একটি পাথরের নীচে বাতাসের টুপিটি রাখল যেখানে সে জানত পরী লোকটি এটি খুঁজে পাবে। তারপরে সে আবার সমুদ্রের দিকে রওনা দিল।

For the rest of his life, Jon spent half the year on a ship and half on the shore till at last he owned his own boat and a hundred acre farmland. From then on he came to be known as Captain Turtle for he was as much at home on the water as he was on the land.

তাঁর জীবনের বাকি সময়গুলি, জন অর্ধেক বছর একটি জাহাজে এবং অর্ধেকটা উপকূলে কাটিয়েছিল, এবং অবশেষে তার নিজের নৌকা এবং একশ একর খামার জমির মালিক হয়েছিল। তখন থেকে সে ক্যাপ্টেন টার্টল নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করেছিল কারণ সে জলেও ততটাই সাচ্ছন্দ বোধ করত যতটা স্থলে।

Ans: Yes, I think it is said rightly. Because he was as much at home on the water as he was on the land.

(d) Why did Jon want to return the wind cap to the fairy man?

Ans: Because Jon was blamed for the storm and was thrown into the sea and was also blamed that all the destruction happened only for the wind cap.

On the occasion of our school’s annual function, I got a chance to perform on the stage. I was very nervous at the start. Then when my name was announced, I entered the stage and started my performance. After four minutes of performance when I stopped, the whole audience gave me a huge round of applause. This was one of the best moments of my life and I will never forget it.

Once I went to Puri with my parents. My parents were sleeping in the hotel after lunch. So I went to the sea beach alone. I saw an empty boat there and sat on it. Suddenly the boat started to sail. I noticed that the boat was not anchored. I was both excited and afraid at that time. After sometime the boat came at the middle of the sea. Suddenly the sky was being covered with black clouds and a storm came. Big waves were rising all over my boat. Then I saw a big ship near me and was rescued by it.
